    TYPE:  Vintage Color Postcard (Continental, 4x6)
    DESCRIPTION: “Mellifont Abbey, Co. Louth: These ruins of the first Cistercian House in Ireland are situated beside the Mattock River, a tributary of the Boyne, 6 miles west of Drogheda.  The Abbey was built in 1142, consecrated in 1157 and was a seat of religious learning until suppressed in 1539.  The remains of the Gate House for a huge square tower rising to about 50 feet.  There are only the outlines of the cloisters, but other considerable portions of the old abbey still stand.”
